About Us

Dr. Shekhar Bhojraj is a distinguished Spine Surgeon hailing from India. He holds the distinction of being the first dedicated and specialized spine surgeon in the country, a role that laid the foundation for a new super-specialty in the medical field.

Having completed his education at Mumbai's KEM Medical College, Dr. Bhojraj began his professional journey as an orthopedic surgeon at the same institution. However, his growing fascination with the emerging field of spine care led him to embark on a global quest for further expertise. Eventually, he chose to fully immerse himself in spine care and went on to establish India's pioneering specialized spine unit at KEM Hospital. While this unit achieved remarkable success, there was an evident need for more extensive resources to advance research and development in the field.

Given the limitations tied to governmental funding for his unit, Dr. Shekhar Bhojraj seized an opportunity offered by Hinduja Hospital to establish a dedicated spine unit within their premises. Recognizing this as a golden chance to secure greater financial support for spine-related research, he collaborated with Hinduja Hospital to establish the first-ever private medical facility in India with a specialized spine unit.

However, Dr. Bhojraj's vision as the Best Spine Surgeon in Mumbai extended far beyond serving only the privileged. He nurtured a deep-seated desire to extend equivalent medical services to marginalized communities. This noble aspiration culminated in the founding of the Spine Foundation, an initiative dedicated to providing high-quality and affordable healthcare to all segments of society, ensuring that quality medical care is accessible to everyone.

Services

1. Ankylosing spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the spine, causing pain, stiffness, and inflammation in vertebrae joints. It can lead to spinal rigidity, starting from the lower back and potentially impacting the upper back, neck, and other joints. Severe cases of Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) can be managed with spine surgery, aiming to improve mobility, alleviate pain, and prevent further spinal damage. The type of surgery depends on the severity and location of spinal damage, including procedures like Decompression, Spinal Fusion, Disk Replacement, Osteotomy, and Laminectomy.

2. Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury, a profoundly life-altering condition, disrupts the essential connection between the brain and the body, frequently leading to profound mobility and sensory loss. Traumatic events, diseases, or degeneration can give rise to this condition. Surgical interventions are frequently necessitated to alleviate Spinal cord injury by relieving pressure and achieving spinal stability. Surgical options encompass decompression techniques to remove tissue or bone compressing the spinal cord, along with spinal fusion using metal components. Additional approaches involve artificial disc replacement, spinal cord stimulation, and regenerative medicine utilizing stem cells or other advanced therapies to effectively repair spinal cord tissue damage.

3. Broken Neck or Back

A broken neck or back, also known as a cervical or lumbar fracture, can cause severe spinal cord damage with potential paralysis. The spine, consisting of 33 vertebrae, supports the body and protects the spinal cord. Fractures in these vertebrae can lead to symptoms such as pain, loss of sensation, motor function impairment, and paralysis. Causes of these fractures include accidents, falls, bone weakening from osteoporosis, spinal tumors, or infections.

4. Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical Spondylosis, a degenerative condition impacting the neck's spinal discs, can lead to discomfort and pain. It often develops with age or due to neck injuries, affecting the upper cervical spine of seven vertebrae. Gradual disc wear and tear are at the root of Cervical Spondylosis, reducing cushioning between vertebrae and potentially causing bone spurs, known as osteophytes, that press on nerves or the spinal cord. As it advances, symptoms include neck stiffness, pain, headaches, numbness, arm weakness, and coordination challenges. Timely medical attention is vital to manage Cervical Spondylosis

5. Cauda Equina Syndrome

Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) demands immediate attention due to its potential for severe consequences. Compression of the cauda equina nerves at the base of the spinal cord leads to rapid-onset neurological symptoms, necessitating prompt treatment to prevent lasting damage. Understanding causes, recognizing symptoms, accurate diagnosis, and timely intervention are crucial for effective CES management. Preventive measures are essential to mitigate the risk of developing this debilitating condition. Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) causes include herniated discs, spinal tumors, infections, spinal stenosis, trauma, and inflammatory conditions. Rapidly developing symptoms comprise lower back pain, leg weakness, numbness, incontinence, and sexual dysfunction, emphasizing the importance of swift medical evaluation and imaging for appropriate care.

6. Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is a spinal disorder where a vertebra shifts relative to another, often causing pain and instability. It can result from defects in the pars interarticularis (isthmic), degeneration (degenerative), or trauma (traumatic). Symptoms include lower back pain, potential nerve compression leading to sciatica, and reduced mobility. Diagnosis involves medical history, physical exams, and imaging like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans. Treatment ranges from lifestyle changes and physical therapy for mild cases to surgery like decompression or spinal fusion for severe cases.

7. Kyphosis

Kyphosis is a medical condition characterized by excessive curvature of the upper spine, resulting in a hunched back appearance. It affects individuals of all ages, causing discomfort and mobility issues. Main causes include poor posture, osteoporosis, congenital factors, diseases like Scheuermann's, and injuries. Symptoms range from visible upper back rounding, back pain, muscle stiffness, to potential neurological problems if nerves are compressed. Treatment varies based on severity and cause, from lifestyle changes and physical therapy for mild cases to surgery for severe cases. Prevention involves maintaining proper posture, regular exercise, nutrition, and avoiding strain.
